Thomas Yayi Boni was born in Tchaourou, Benin, in 1952. He is the current President of Benin, and the 4th president of the Republic of Benin. His education includes stays at the National University of Benin, the Cheikh Anta Diop University, the University of Orleans and the University of Paris or the Sorbonne. Boni holds a Doctorate of Economics.
He began his career in the financial sector in 1980, he held several posts in the West African central bank and eventually became the director of the West African Development Bank. In 2006 he participated in the presidential elections, he won the first round with 32 percent of the vote, and then won the run-off with 75 percent of the vote. In 2007 he survived an assassination attempt, in which his convoy was attacked.
