Biography:


Sofonisba Anguissola was born into a family of seven children, her father an enlightened humanist opted to have all of his children educated including his daughters. Sofonisba and her sister were sent to study art with the well-known artist Bernardino Campi. Campi's acceptance to teach the two girls was a breakthrough for the time, and after this it became acceptable for females to learn in painters' studios. However, she still faced restrictions in what she was allowed to paint. Because of this she decided to concentrate her art in portrait paintings.
